After the talks, Nowak said that the UN wanted to get all
governments and sides from the former Yugoslavia to join forces and
resolve the problem of missing persons.
"The Croatian Government fully supports this process. We shall
offer expert help, especially in the identification of remains,"
said Kostovic.
"Cooperating with the Commission will not put an end to our
talks with Belgrade concerning missing persons," he added.
Kostovic suggested that a joint missing persons commission be
set up as part of the Transitional Administration in Eastern
Slavonia. The Commission would have to closely cooperate with both
the Croatian Government and the Multilateral Commission, he said.
"Under Croatian legislation, an authorization issued by a
competent judge is required for excavating mass graves. Naturally,
this applies to eastern Slavonia as well. In the cases where the
International War Crimes Tribunal is involved, the Tribunal will
have priority and we will act as observers," said Kostovic.
