WASHINGTON, 9 Oct (Hina) - The U.N. Security Council on Thursday

Members of the Security Council reiterate their earlier
calls for urgent fulfilment of Croatian promises and obligations,
which are to determine the Council's actions, said the President
of the Security Council, Chilean Ambassador Juan Somavia,
following consultations in the U.N. headquarters in New York.
In his report on UNTAES, which was made known on Tuesday,
the U.N. Secretary General estimated that conditions for the
transfer of authority from the Transitional Administration in the
Danube river region to Croatia have still not been created and
that the Security Council should make its final decision after a
new report in December.
The UNTAES mandate expires on 15 January 1998.
Somavia said that the Council also supported the
Transitional Administrator William Walker, who had submitted his
report at a Security Council session, as well as the Secretary
General's report, adding that they had given an objective and
balanced estimation of the situation.
The Security Council members especially took note of the
positive steps made by the Croatian government, as well as of
additional obligations Croatia had undertaken recently.
They also welcomed the intensification of Croatia's
cooperation with The Hague Tribunal.
Despite that, members of the Council expressed concern over
the fact that there are still many areas in which obligations
have not been fulfilled and which, therefore, call for further
and immediate action by the Croatian government towards the
complete fulfilment of those obligations, so that conditions for
the successful completion of the UNTAES mandate could be created.
Members of the Council also concluded that it was necessary
for the Serb leadership to have a more active role in the
reintegration process.
The Security Council could give its opinion of the
Secretary General's recommendations and issue a presidential
statement next week, diplomatic circles in New York say.
The statement of the Security Council President, given on
behalf of the Council, is a less binding form of statement than a
presidential statement.
