MANY HOUSES OF THE DISPLACED ARE UNJUSTIFIABLY OCCUPIED - ILOK MAYOR W

MAYOR W $ ARNS UNTAES ILOK, Oct 3 (Hina) - Ilok Mayor Stipan Kraljevic on Friday forwarded a protest note to UNTAES Civil Affairs head Gerard Fischer because the UN Transitional Administration in eastern Croatia tolerates the fact that many houses of Croatian displaced persons are unjustifiably occupied. The Ilok mayor demands of UNTAES to be more determined and fair in eliminating obstructions to the return. Ilok is a town in the Danube river region of eastern Croatia under UN's transitional administration. "There are many (Serb) families who already own houses in Vojvodina (region in western Yugoslavia), or in the Vukovar area, or who have sold their property in Croatia, but (continue to) use houses of displaced persons in Ilok, and we consider this non- permissible", Kraljevic said in his protest note. "Illegal organs of the so called Serb Krajina continue to issue rulings for the use of houses in Ilok belonging to the displaced", he warned. Despite requiring all local self-government staff and businessmen to reside in towns they work in, UNTAES has done nothing to enable them to live in their own houses, the Ilok mayor said in the protest note. "In the vicinity of their own homes, they have to pay rented accommodation, because their houses are occupied", he added. Houses of displaced Croats continue to be looted since UNTAES, Kraljevic said, is "very slow in seeing to requests" of the Ilok administration to inspect and seal the houses. He concluded his protest note by warning that UNTAES' decision not to allow displaced persons from Ilok to work their land is "illogical". (hina) ha jn 032222 MET oct 97
