ERDUT, Sept 24 (Hina) - The Municipal Council of Erdut, a UN-
administered town in the Danube region of eastern Croatia, on
Wednesday held a session and elected members of a commission for
organizing and monitoring the return of displaced persons and
refugees.
According to Erdut Municipal Council president Jovo Jelic,
of the Serb Democratic Independent Party (SDSS), the task of the
commission is to follow problems on the ground and assist in
eliminating them through cooperation with the Transitional Police
and UNTAES.
Council member Marko Dumancic, a displaced person from
Aljmas, warned about robberies of Croatian property.
Members of a commission for finances and economy were also
elected at today's session. Osijek-Baranja County deputy prefect
Anica Horvat said the Erdut Municipal Council must start seeking
financial sources, since the financial support from the county
and the government were not sufficient.
According to Council member Tomislav Kovacic of the
Croatian Democratic Union Party (HDZ), "the municipality of Erdut
is one of the most promising because of its natural and economic
resources, which have to be used."
The Erdut Municipal Council is made up of 11 councillors of
the SDSS, and five from the HDZ.
