RAB, Sept 14 (Hina) - A memorial service for the victims of a former
fascist concentration camp in Kampor, Croatia's northern Adriatic
island of Rab, was served on Sunday to mark the 54th anniversary
since the liberation of about 4,500 prisoners of the camp.
Some 15,000 prisoners passed through the camp between July
1942 and September 1943, Rab Mayor Zdenko Matijevic pointed out.
Almost two thirds were Slovenes, the rest were Croats, while Jews
were brought to the camp toward the end, he added.
There had been no killings in the camp, but according to
Matijevic, Kampor is justly labelled as infamous. Estimates show
that some 4,640 prisoners died as a result of hunger, exhaustion and
inhuman living conditions.
