LIVNO, Aug 31 (Hina) - A round table called "Achievements of
Civil Society - Democracy, Human Rights and Possibilities and
Realization of Human Rights Through Media", organized by the U.S.
non-government Centre for Civic Cooperation organization, was
held in Livno (western Bosnia) on Saturday.
A representative of the Helsinki Committee for Human
Rights in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Srdjan Dizdarevic, spoke about
basic human rights and the situation in BH.
Attending were representatives of Livno opposition
political parties which will take part in the forthcoming
municipal election in BH, as well as Croatian and Bosnian
reporters.
According to Dizdarevic, the basic human rights as
specified in the Dayton peace accord, such as the return of
refugees and displaced persons and the holding of a regular and
democratic election, were as yet unrealized, nor had any general
progress been made.
Instead of legislative, executive and judiciary power, in
BH there is political domination over courts and the judiciary as
a method of strengthening power and excluding alternatives, said
Dizdarevic.
Speaking about the media, Zeljko Ivankovic from Sarajevo
said "in BH there are three dominant media fields which are
controlled by ruling parties." There were three official truths
on Bosnia's territory, he said, adding the international
community was making a step forward by establishing independent
media in an attempt to ensure proper and truthful reporting.
