VIOLENCE IN BRCKO DOES NOT FRIGHTEN INT COMMUNITY - FARRAND

SARAJEVO, Aug 29 (Hina) - The international supervisor for Brcko, Robert Farrand, said on Friday that yesterday's incidents in this north-eastern Bosnian town would not force the international community to withdraw, and that he would take all necessary measures for the mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina to be completed. A statement the office of the high representative for BH issued on Farrand's behalf, pointed out the incidents in Brcko were a constituent part of a deliberate plan, in which local political leaders behaved in the same way the mob which started the violence did. There was no way a 1,200-strong mob of manipulated people might put into question the peace process in Brcko, the statement said, adding that violence backed by authorities was not going to frighten the international community. What happened in Brcko was just one day lost, Farrand said, a day which could have been used positively. For this reason our efforts will double, he stressed. Farrand said local authorities in Brcko, including the police, would be held responsible for any new violence. (hina) ha 292003 MET aug 97
