SARAJEVO, Aug 29 (Hina) - The situation in Brcko was calm and
without incidents since morning, spokesman for the office of the
international high representative for BH Duncan Bullivant told
reporters in Sarajevo on Friday. Staff of the high
representative's office in that north-eastern Bosnian town
continued to carry out their regular tasks despite yesterday's
serious incidents, he said.
UN spokesman Liam McDowall said there were no UN
representatives in Brcko anymore. It was impossible to say when
they could go on with their work, he added.
According to McDowall, members of the Stabilization Force
yesterday evacuated from Brcko the remaining 50 UN employees,
mostly civilians, with the assistance of 40 international
policemen.
SFOR spokesman Chris Riley confirmed that two U.S. soldiers
were injured after being hit with stones during yesterday's
incidents in Brcko. U.S. soldiers at a check-point on a bridge
near Brcko fired shots in the air and used tear-gas to prevent
the mob from hitting them with Molotov cocktails, he said.
What happened in Brcko was the result of an arranged
campaign, Riley said. Since early morning, the instigators called
on people to come out in the streets and cause trouble, he added,
pointing out the media in Pale directly incited the tension.
UN spokesman McDowall warned that top politicians in Pale
were also responsible for the violence in Brcko.
Representatives of international organizations in BH
reiterated today the only way out of the current crisis in the
Bosnian Serb entity was the scheduling of a new parliamentary
election. Commenting on a proposition by Yugoslav President
Slobodan Milosevic that a presidential election be scheduled
simultaneously, Bullivant said Milosevic should not interfere
with interior issues of another country.
