OSIJEK, 24 (Hina) - Osijek County Prefect Branimir Glavas on
Sunday sent a letter to the U.N. Transitional Administrator in
eastern Slavonia, William Walker, proposing a solution to the
problem of integration into the Croatian education system of
those children in the area whose parents are not Croatian
citizens and currently do not have Croatian documents. #L#
I assure you that all children in the Croatian Danube river
region will be integrated into the education process as of the
first day of the new school year, Glavas said, stressing the
obligation of solving the problem of permanent residence of those
children and their parents.
In case of a change of permanent residence, state offices
would issue certificates confirming regular school attendance so
that children would not have problems in further education, the
letter said.
"Although only 14 days remain before the beginning of the
new school year, which I suppose will not be enough for those
individuals to acquire the status of Croatian citizens, I think
that there is no reason for your concern. As representatives of
the Croatian authorities we want to show sincere care for every
child and with this small act of understanding to make a small
contribution as well as to help love win a victory over hatred,
trust over distrust and to help your and our mission become
successful in the interest of all people and citizens of the
Republic of Croatia," Glavas said.
To find acceptable, compromise solutions is the basic
condition for the completion of the peace process and speedy
return of displaced persons and refugees, without which the
normalisation of life in this part of Croatia will not be
possible, Glavas said in the letter.
