WALKER IN VUKOVAR: I SHALL CONTINUE WHERE KLEIN ENDED

VUKOVAR, Aug 18 (Hina) - The new UN transitional administrator for the Danube region of eastern Croatia, U.S. diplomat William G. Walker, arrived in Vukovar on Monday shortly after 4 p.m. He would continue where General Jacques Klein ended, he told reporters. Saying he was glad to be in Vukovar, Walker said he knew UN's mission and thought they would carry it out. Asked about the return of displaced persons and refugees, the new transitional administrator said he would seek ways to step it up and carry it out. A statement issued to reporters points out Walker's mandate is "clear", while "aims are unchanged". Working with the Croatian government, UNTAES will aim at inter-ethnic reconciliation, a two-way return of displaced persons and refugees, and the rebirth of economy and welfare of all who live in the Croatian Danube region, the statement says. The new transitional administrator will deepen cooperation with all sides, it adds. Walker flew from Zagreb to UNTAES' headquarters in Vukovar by a UN helicopter, accompanied by his deputy, Souren Seraydarian. Waiting for him were UNTAES' armed force commander Major General Willie Hanset and UNTAES' head of civil affairs Gerard Fischer. (hina) ha jn 181947 MET aug 97
