ZAGREB, Aug 22 (Hina) - Representatives of the Croatian Ministry
of Education and Sport and the UN Transitional Administration
(UNTAES) in the Danube region met in Zagreb on Friday to discuss
the process of reintegration of the education system, the
Ministry said in a statement.
Ten Croats, four Serbs and two Hungarians were appointed
acting headmasters of a total of 16 schools in the UN-
administered part of Osijek County. Two Croats, two Serbs and one
Hungarian were named heads of departments in secondary schools in
that area.
In Vukovar County, whose eastern part is under UN
transitional administration, 11 Croats and seven Serbs were named
acting headmasters of 18 schools. Two Croats, two Serbs, one
Ruthenian and one Slovak were appointed heads of departments in
secondary schools.
Primary school textbooks are being translated into the
Serbian language, while classes in secondary schools will be
conducted in Croatian under a Croatian curriculum, with the
possibility of additional classes for the Serb minority.
UNTAES officials expressed satisfaction with the approach
of the Croatian Ministry.
Classes will begin on September 8 with the opening of
schools in Vukovar and Beli Manastir in the presence of
representatives of the Croatian Ministry of Education and Sport,
UNTAES and the Council of Europe, the statement said.
