Present at the ceremony were many county and state officials,
representatives of the diplomatic corps, delegations from Budapest, Graz
and other friendly towns.
Opening the festival, Matesa recalled that many had tried to
disable this ancient Croatian town in every way, but had always failed.
He said a tragedy had occurred in the town, which consisted of
three evil acts: barbarianism, genocide and culturocide. "They attempted
to uproot the culture and spirit of this town, but that show had only
one performance - there will be no encore," he said.
The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is to last 45 days and will host 70
musical and folklore performances by 1,100 artists from 17 countries.
