CROATIA IS SATISFIED WITH LATEST U.N. RESOLUTIONS

ZAGREB, July 15 (Hina) - Croatia is satisfied with both resolutions the UN Security Council adopted on Monday, particularly with the one on UNTAES because it means termination of its mandate in Croatia, a senior Croatian diplomat told Hina on Tuesday. "It is evident from the resolution that the Secretary General has to submit another report on October 6, but already now it can be said that for Croatia this (the resolution) means termination of the mandate," the diplomat said. Under an agreement with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Croatia had accepted "a light observer mission, the likes of which can be currently found in a dozen European countries," he said. The diplomat said that the resolution on UNTAES also revealed pressures on Croatia to ensure the safe return of displaced Croats and Serb refugees to their pre-war homes. "So far 3,634 (Serb) families have applied for return, or a total of 7,814 persons. 3,103 families, or 7,060 people, don't wish to return and 3,000 families have already applied to the Agency for Mediation in Real Estate Transactions for help in leaving (the country)," he said, citing the latest data. After an incident in Kostajnica in mid-May, about 1,600 Serbs had returned, of which foreign diplomats in Zagreb had been informed, the Foreign Ministry official said. The diplomat said that Croatia would fulfil its obligations under an agreement with UNTAES and UNHCR on the return of refugees and its letter of intent to the Security Council. Commenting on the UN resolution dealing with Prevlaka, Croatia's southernmost tip bordering Yugoslavia, the official said that "it is most important that Croatia's territorial integrity and its sovereignty over Prevlaka were reaffirmed." He added that Croatia was willing to negotiate on the basis of article 4 of the agreement on the normalisation of relations with Yugoslavia because it regarded Prevlaka exclusively as a security issue. After the reintegration of the Danube river region, which is a priority, Croatia would make efforts to define the land and sea border with Yugoslavia, whereby the need for an UN observer mission on Prevlaka would cease to exist, the diplomat said. Speaking of today's departure of Foreign Minister Mate Granic for Bulgaria, the official said that Croatia, as a Central European country, wanted to develop good neighbourly relations with all countries of South-eastern Europe. "Croatia wants to have good relations with all countries in the region and prove that good relations can be developed successfully without forming any associations," he said.
