ZAGREB, June 11 (Hina) - The Week of Croats From Hungary would take
place in Zagreb between 16 and 22 June under the auspices of Croatian
President Franjo Tudjman, Mijo Karagic, the president of the National
Self-Government of Croats in Hungary told a press conference in Zagreb
on Wednesday.
This cultural manifestation is organised by the Croatian Emigrants'
Society and the National Self-Government of Croats in Hungary.
Croats have lived in Hungary for almost seven centuries, Karagic
said, adding that according to Hungarian Government data there are
90,000 Croats living there nowadays. Most Croats live along the west and
south Hungarian borders, and along the Danube river, Karagic said.
The Association of Croats in Hungary was established as an umbrella
association in 1990, while the National Self-Government of Croats in
Hungary has been active since 1994, Karagic said, pointing out that the
latter received about 130,000 votes at local elections that year.
The Week of Croats From Hungary will include several cultural
events, such as a photography exhibition, an appearance by the Croatian
Theatre from Pecs, folklore ensembles, and two forums - "Croats in
Hungary: From History to the Present Day" and "Language Resources of
Croats in Hungary".
The manifestation will also include a literary meeting with
Croatian writers from Hungary.
