reaction to a metal workers protest released figures showing
measures it employed and resources it earmarked for the
restructuring and financial rehabilitation of metal-
manufacturing companies in Croatia.
According to the Croatian Government and Ministry of Finance, 40
companies have undergone the restructuring and financial
rehabilitation processes from December 10, with a total of US$645
million invested, and US$960 million worth of state guarantees.
These measures helped 20,757 employees retain their jobs, and
provide for 7,829 others, said a statement from the Government's
Communications Office.
Debts of 40 companies have been settled by the transfer of shares
from the portfolio of the Croatian Privatisation Fund or the
conversion of deposits. Seven of these companies are shipbuilding
companies.
The statement also mentions the Government is considering
financial reconstruction of another 20 metal processing
companies.
