ZAGREB, Dec 1 (Hina)- Speaking on Tuesday to the press about a
meeting between President Tudjman and the block of six Opposition
parties, scheduled for Thursday morning, the Croatian Democratic
Union's whip Vladimir Seks and the Liberal Party (LS) leader Vlado
Gotovac described the role that president Tudjman will take at the
meeting differently.
Gotovac, presently the spokesman of the six, said that the block
would speak with Tudjman in his capacity as president of the HDZ.
"If during the meeting the President of the Republic prevails over
the president of the HDZ we shall see what will be the consequences
of that".
Gotovac said he could not speculate what could provoke the
Opposition to walk out of the meeting, but emphasised that that
should be prevented by all possible means.
HDZ's vice president Vladimir Seks on Tuesday told reporters at the
Parliament that Franjo Tudjman would represent the state at the
meeting. When asked whether the Opposition would agree to meet
under those circumstances, Seks said that was what had been agreed
because the agenda concerned a state matter - functioning of the
Parliament.
"I am completely unaware of that", Gotovac told Hina in a telephone
comment on Seks' statement. He reiterated that the six had agreed
the talks should commence at the party level, after which it should
be seen whether they should be extended to the state level.
Seks, on the other hand, told the press that it remained to be seen
whether Thursday talks would include a meeting exclusively at the
party level.
When asked whether Seks' statement could bring the talks into
question, Gotovac answered he did not believe that could cause a
misunderstanding.
In a statement for journalists after the meeting of the six, Gotovac
said he believed the meeting would prove a new trend in political
life, "because this is the first time that the Opposition and the
HDZ are talking in this mode and under these conditions".
