ZAGREB, Nov 25 (Hina) - Three railway workers' unions postponed a
general strike scheduled for Thursday, because they have begun
negotiations with the Croatian Railways company Administration on
their requests.
Union representatives are to meet Croatian Prime Minister Zlatko
Matesa on Thursday, as well as Finance Minister Borislav Skegro and
Transport Minister Zeljko Luzavec.
At the meeting with Government representatives, unions will
primarily try to obtain an increase in wages and prevent a tycoon
from owning the company's majority stock, that is, a dubious
privatisation of suburban transport, president of the Union of
Engine Drivers, Nenad Mrgan, told Hina.
The three biggest Croatian Railways unions, the Union of
Infrastructure, the Union of Engine Drivers and the Union of
Railway Workers, announced a general strike if an agreement
regarding their requests is not reached by November 26.
Their requests include an increase in wages by 17.5 per cent per
hour as of January 1, an increase in daily allowances, payment of
subsidies and Christmas bonuses, and meal subsidies.
