ZAGREB, Nov 25 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on
Wednesday expressed readiness for cooperation with all
"constructive political forces" in the country in the interest of
Croatia's internal development and its international position.
"From the onset we have conducted the policy of reconciliation and
called for cooperation even on those parties which have programmes
farthest to our own, and especially those parties which have
similar platforms to that of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)",
President Tudjman said at a press conference held at Zagreb's Pleso
airport upon his arrival from Greece, where he was on a three-day
visit.
The President said he was not familiar with the invitation for talks
by the bloc of six Opposition parties, adding that he, as well as the
ruling party, "are in any case ready for and offer cooperation to
all constructive Croatian political forces, with the aim of solving
the current internal problems, including the finding of common
views as regards international questions".
Asked about the activities of Croatian intelligence services, the
President stressed that "the duty of the intelligence services is
to protect the peace-time order and security of the Croatian
system".
He added though that there are very few countries which are
interwoven with such a foreign surveillance network and different
foreign interests to the degree Croatia is. The activities of the
intelligence services can be discussed publicly but the methods of
their work cannot, Tudjman said.
He also expressed conviction that the Croatian people would again
vote for those political forces "which have brought about the
establishment of the independent and democratic Croatia and which
are leading Croatia towards the status of one of the most respected
and constructive countries in the region".
According to a US opinion poll published recently, the HDZ and the
Social Democratic Party (SDP) enjoy the support of the same number
of voters.
"All these polls have been prepared in advance in their own way,
expressing someone's wishes in advance", Tudjman said.
