ZAGREB, Nov 20 (Hina) - Representatives of six Croatian opposition
parties on Friday handed to the president of parliament their
resignations on all parliamentary duties, bar those as
representatives.
Fifty-six MPs of the Social Democratic Party, the Croatian
Peasants' Party, the Croatian Social Liberal Party, the Liberal
Party, the Istrian Democratic Assembly, and the Croatian People's
Party resigned on over 100 parliamentary and related duties.
The latter were duties in delegations to the Council of Europe, the
Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Inter-
Parliamentary Union, and functions in the Croatian Privatisation
Fund, Croatian Radio-Television, etc.
Resignations were also handed by MPs of the Istrian Democratic
Forum, the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Party, and three independent
minority MPs, said the current spokesman and coordinator of the
opposition six, Radimir Cacic.
The resignations were the result of the refusal of the governing
Croatian Democratic Union to establish an investigating committee
which was to determine whether there had been abuse in the work of
Croatian security and intelligence services.
Asked whether the opposition could change its mind with regard to
announcements that the resignations could result in the suspension
of Croatia in the Council of Europe, the new opposition six
coordinator, Vlado Gotovac, asserted the decision on the
resignations could not be altered before previous changes in the
reasons which had urged them.
