ZAGREB, Nov 19 (Hina) - The negotiation committee of five Croatian
school unions is dissatisfied with the announced amounts to be set
aside for education next year.
The unions told reporters on Thursday that they wanted at least four
per cent of the Gross Domestic Product to be allocated to education
in 1999, instead of the announced 2.3 per cent.
With the current trend of allocations from the GDP, it will take the
Croatian education sector 22 years to reach the level of
allocations in transition countries, and 29 in countries of the
European Union.
Vesna Kanizaj, president of the Independent Union of High School
Employers, said the draft budget impoverished the high school
sector and enabled further social stratification in Croatia.
