ZAGREB, Oct 30 (Hina) - Five school unions on Friday announced they
would stage a one-day strike on November 12 if the Government does
not respond to their requests by next week.
The unions requested that negotiations start on a selective
increase in salaries in schools.
The five school unions will not, unlike the Union of Croatian
Teachers, join the negotiating team of union of public and
government services which has already completed two rounds of
negotiations on the policy of salaries for next year.
"The negotiating team has shown frivolity at the beginning of
negotiations, because its members argued among themselves
regarding Christmas bonuses for the army and police," president of
the "Preporod" school union, Vinko Filipovic, said.
Besides, he added, not one public service, with the exception of
schools, does not have the argument a Parliament decision on the
selective increase of salaries.
President of the Union of High Schools, Vesna Kanizaj said the
negotiating committee would not be able to get one kuna from the
Government.
"Finance Minister Borislav Skegro stated clearly that there would
be no increase in salaries next year, except for a four per cent
increase in the salary budget, and even this will be 'gulped up' by
inflation," Kanizaj said.
The Alliance of Independent Croatian Unions expressed support to
the school unions and denounced the Government's decision
according to which non-participating teachers in June's strike
would be paid awards.
Of the US$17,7 million said to be set aside from the state budget for
the teachers that did not participate in June's strike, not one cent
had been paid to any student dorm, which the Education and Sports
Ministry had obviously forgotten, Kanizaj stressed.
