ZAGREB, Nov 10 (Hina) - The Croatian Sabor's (parliament) House of Counties on Tuesday okayed a bill enabling the complete writing-off of some US$101 million worth of debts of companies from the former occupied areas. The MPs supported the assessment by Labour and Social Welfare Minister Joso Skara that the bill was a huge contribution to the companies from the former occupied areas, as well as a proof of care for returnees. The Upper House also endorsed the ratification of several international conventions, protocols and agreements. The MPs supported the ratification of a protocol on further reduction of sulphur dioxide emission of the Convention on Far- Reaching Border Air Pollution from 1979. The Upper House agreed that Croatia is a small-scale polluter because its share in the European sulphur dioxide emission amounts to only 0.5 per cent. However, it has a large percentage of sulphur dioxide reception from other neighbouring countries. More than 85 per cent of sulphur dioxide emission is estimated to come to Croatia from outside of its borders, especially from the industrial regions of northern Italy. The MPs supported the ratification of changes to the Convention on the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea Against Pollution, the Convention on the Protection of Plants, a European agreement on main inland navigation routes of international importance, and an agreement on social insurance between Croatia and Canada.
