Journalists' Society (HND) on Tuesday decided to open a fund for
assistance to the family of Ankica Lepej, "in solidarity towards
the person that was the source of information on the state of
account of President Tudjman's wife, which is a fact which the
public has a right to know."
In a statement issued Tuesday, the HND stressed that the income
scale of the family of Ankica Lepej was perfectly clear,
considering the fact that her husband has been unemployed for eight
years already, and her son is still in school.
"As Mrs. Lepej is liable to go to jail for disclosing a bank secret,
and reporters must, under their code, have solidarity with their
sources, the HND executive committee has decided to help in this
way, notwithstanding the fact that Ankica Lepej volunteered to
uncover her identity," the statement said.
Zagreb's daily "Jutarnji List" on October 17 ran an article
entitled "Ankica Tudjman on March 24 of This Year Ties a Deposit of
DM210,000 and US$15,740 with Zagrebacka Banka".
Zagrebacka Banka (ZB) has filed charges before the State Attorney's
Office against the person who disclosed banking secrets and for the
unauthorised and illegal disclosure of information on the state of
account of a client of the bank.
