ZAGREB, Sept 23 (Hina) - The State Attorney of the Republic of
Croatia and state attorneys from counties and the City of Zagreb on
Wednesday discussed the application of a law on compensation for
property confiscated during the Yugoslav Communist regime.
The law, which went into force on January 1, 1997, has raised
numerous doubts, the state attorneys noted.
The application of the law by administrative bodies has been slow
due to a lack of necessary by-laws.
Another reason for its slow application is the poor situation in
land registers which the then Communist regime systematically
neglected, State Attorney Petar Sale said.
One law is not enough to rectify what had been almost completely
neglected over the past fifty years, Deputy State Attorney Danica
Damjanovic said.
Analysing the articles of the law, Damjanovic informed her
colleagues about the doubts the State Attorney's Office was having
and its views regarding individual solutions.
The meeting was welcomed by the Supreme Court President Milan
Vukovic who called for the adoption of the most adequate model of
compensation for those whose property had been taken away.
