ZAGREB, Sept 14 (Hina) - The Croatian Social Democratic Party (SDP)
on Monday organised in Zagreb an international conference on
children's rights.
The participants advocated an accelerated establishment of an
ombudsman for children in Croatia, in order to have a more effective
protection of children's rights.
In attendance are representatives of Croatian ministries, members
of the Council of Europe, Croatian MPs, domestic experts and
representatives of organisations which deal in human rights.
A dozen European countries have a children's ombudsman, who is the
highest level to which a party may refer, said Elena Poptodorova, a
member of the Committee for Social Issues, Health and Family of the
Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly.
SDP vice-president Snjezana Biga-Friganovic recalled the
systematic violation of children's rights in the Homeland War, when
about 300 children were killed, about 1,000 were wounded, many were
displaced or orphaned.
Tomorrow the Council of Europe guests and an SDP delegation will
visit Vukovar, in eastern Croatia, where they are to hold talks with
the Mayor and representatives of local authorities.
