COMMISSIONER FOR MIRKOVCI APPOINTED

( Editorial: --> 8681 ) VINKOVCI, Sept 7 (Hina) - The municipal leadership of Vinkovci (eastern Slavonia) has appointed Mile Madjar commissioner for the 12th local committee of Mirkovci. Madjar, the former head of the temporary municipality of Mirkovci, will hold his new office until the election of a council of local committees, to be held in December this year. The election will solve the question of Serb minority representatives in the Vinkovci town council and authorities. Before the war, Mirkovci was part of the town of Vinkovci. During the Serb aggression, the village was one of the main Serb strongholds in the Vinkovac area. On May 15, 1997, the then U.N. Transitional Administrator for Eastern Slavonia, Jacques Klein, gave Mirkovci the status of a temporary municipality. In May this year, the majority of Mirkovci residents signed a petition requesting the transformation of Mirkovci into a permanent municipality, but their wish was not supported by the Vukovar-Srijem County Assembly and later the Croatian National Parliament.
