HOTELIERS TO RECEIVE GRANTS IN PREPARATION FOR NEXT TOURISM SEASON

( Editorial: --> 4199 ) BRELA, Aug 17 (Hina) - Tourism Minister Sergej Morsan says the summer of 1998 will be a relatively good season for Croatia with an expected increase in tourist traffic. Following the adding up of this year's financial performances, there will be a higher quality concept of the total Croatian tourism product for next year and a thorough confirmation of pricing policy. With support from the entire state policy directed towards tourism, better financial results can be expected for the next season, Morsan said after a working meeting on Monday at the Soline hotel in Brela with hoteliers and tourism workers from the Makarska riviera and other parts of the Split-Dalmatia County. The Croatian Tourism Minister also announced that hoteliers "with certainty can count" on specific funds which will be granted to them from the state budget as an impetus in preparing for the next tourism season. These grants to hotels would be awarded ahead of next summer and be based on the number of foreign tourists accommodated in them. Dinko Franchini and Mile Razovic from the Split-Dalmatia County Tourism Board informed Morsan on the results of the season so far. Currently about 56,000 guests are accommodated in the county, while just in the first seven months of this year there were 1,928,000 overnight stays, which was 15 per cent more than last year. Of this total more than one and a half million overnight stays were made by foreigners. Speaking about prices, Morsan said that the value added tax and excise duties should not have had an influence on the "often baseless increases in prices of hotel and catering-tourist services". The problem of displaced people being accommodated in hotels was also mentioned at the meeting. For example, the 600-bed Neptun hotel in Tucepi was not open to guests this season because 40 or so refugees were still living there. Morsan said that the large part of displaced people would soon be relocated from hotels. (Hina) mbr 172209 MET aug 98
