UN MISSION SAYS POLICE IN DRVAR ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB

( Editorial: --> 8282 ) SARAJEVO, July 17 (Hina) - The Human Rights Office of the United Nations mission in Bosnia on Friday published a report on the situation in Drvar, a Croat-controlled town in western Bosnia. The report emphasises that not one perpetrator of numerous attacks on Serbs returnees to the town has been arrested and punished despite clear evidence on those responsible for the incidents. The report in particular recalls the murder of Vojislav and Mileva Trninic, a married couple killed on April 16, the arson of houses to which Serbs intended to return, and the mass incidents which took place on April 24, when many houses were set on fire, Serb returnees were maltreated and Mayor Milan Marceta was beaten. The UN mission in Bosnia points out that evidence on the possible perpetrators existed in all the said cases, but that local police did nothing to ascertain their responsibility and to punish them. The report also recalls that the replacement of Drvar police head Ivan Jurcevic and cantonal Interior Minister Barisa Letica, on account of their responsibility for police oversights, as demanded by the head of the UN mission in Bosnia Elisabeth Rehn and international police commissioner Richard Monk was not complied with. The deadline for establishing the rule of law in Drvar and for doing justice has long been ignored, the UN report said, and demanded that urgent measures be taken to improve the situation.
