STOCKHOLM, June 13 (Hina) - The Croatian National Parliament
Speaker Vlatko Pavletic, who is attending a conference of European
parliamentary presidents in Stockholm, on Saturday agreed on a
conference of parliamentary presidents of the Central European
Initiative (CEI), which should take place in Graz on October 24-
25.
The parliamentary speakers of Croatia, Italy, Austria, Hungary and
Poland on Saturday met for working breakfast and agreed on topics
which are to be discussed at the conference.
These include results in fighting organised crime, minimum
parliamentary standards, parliamentary control over the rule of
law and security in the region with emphasis on refugee problems.
During Saturday's discussions at a meeting of parliamentary
presidents of the Council of Europe countries, the issue of Cyprus
caused a dispute following a statement by the Turkish Parliament
Speaker and former foreign minister Hikmet Cetin who said that
human rights on this island were being largely violated.
The Cypriot representative Spyros Kyprianu responded by recalling
measures on normalising the situation, introduced by the Cypriot
authorities.
According to Pavletic, all discussions contain a lot of specific
problems which hamper the adoption of solutions.
However, there is strong joint care for the institution of
parliament as an expression of the will of people and its importance
in the international community, Pavletic added.
