OSIJEK, May 24 (Hina) - A small group of high school graduates of
Serb nationality on May 22 caused an incident in Beli Manastir,
eastern Croatia, the Osijek-Baranja County Office for Education
and Culture said in a statement Sunday.
Under the influence of alcohol, a dozen graduates demolished a
section of the town's high school premises, broke windows, sang
nationalist songs, and shouted "this is Serbia", "we'll kill all
Croats", "Ustashas out", said the statement signed by Office head
Ksenija Zbozil.
Graffiti such as "Serbia all the way to Zagreb" had been written on
the school's walls earlier.
In the evening hours, the drunk graduates were apprehended, but
their uncontrolled behaviour had appalled other pupils and
teachers, causing fear and dissatisfaction among those of Croatian
nationality, against whom their outburst was directed, the
statement said.
The incident was unpleasant as it occurred at a time when the
Croatian government and the international community, loyal Serbs
and members of other national minorities living in eastern Croatia
have been making great efforts to provide normal living conditions
for all residents, especially returnees to the area, the statement
concluded.
