49 VICTIMS EXHUMED FROM MASS GRAVE IN VUKOVAR GIVEN PROPER BURIAL

( Editorial: --> 2674 ) VUKOVAR, May 9 (Hina) - Forty-nine victims of Serb aggression on Croatia who were buried in a mass grave in Vukovar were given a funeral on Saturday in this eastern Croatian city. Bodies of 27 soldiers, two civil defence members and 15 civilians were buried at the "New Vukovar Cemetery" and five Croatian soldiers will be buried in other counties, in line with the wishes of families. So far 212 victims have been exhumed since April 28. One hundred and ten have been identified. The funeral ceremony was served by the Djakovo and Srijem Bishop, Ciril Kos. Officials of the city of Vukovar, Vukovar-Srijem County, Defence Ministry, Interior Ministry, Croatian Homeland War Soldiers' Ministry and Croatian government officials expressed their condolences. Vukovar Deputy Mayor Stipe Seremet said it was "the obligation of all of us to build new life on the foundation of faith the victims who had died for their homeland had". Former Croatian Army Chief-of-Staff General Anton Tus said "the crime committed in Vukovar must be punished, but it will never be because justice will never catch up with it. The reconstruction of Vukovar and the Croatian Danube River region and the return (of displaced persons and refugees) to these areas is the best reply to these crimes and a thanks for all those who had given their lives for Croatia". The enormous contribution of Vukovar and eastern Slavonia to the Homeland War is measurable by the fact that over fifty per cent of killed persons in Croatia were from this area, Tus said. Croatian Homeland War Soldiers' Minister Juraj Njavro, on behalf of the Ministry and Croatian government, said that the whole of Croatia was in mourning with Vukovar today. "It was also in mourning in 1991. Although it could not help us, Croatia suffered together with us. The place on which we stand today and on which we will be in the next several weeks is crying out for justice, but not the kind which is based on revenge and hatred," Njavro said.
