CROATIA TO SIGN CONVENTION ON SAFE RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL

( Editorial: --> 5540 ) ZAGREB, April 8 (Hina) - Economy Minister Nenad Porges will sign a join convention on the safe disposal of waste fuel and radioactive waste in Vienna on Thursday. The text of the convention was adopted at a diplomats' conference at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna in September 1997. The convention is aimed at achieving and maintaining a high level of safety in the disposal of waste fuel and radioactive waste. The document follows a convention on nuclear safety, ratified by the Croatian Parliament in 1995. Croatia is also interested in its neighbours adopting the joint convention, which will bind them to dispose of waste fuel and radioactive waste in a way which will be safe and not threaten people and the environment in Croatia. The adoption of the convention also envisages participation in checking-up the safety of waste disposal in other countries- signatories to the convention. (hina) jn rm /mb 081636 MET apr 98
