Josipovic issues message on Day of Remembrance for victims of totalitarian regimes

ZAGREB, Aug 23 (Hina) - On the occasion of the European Day of Remembrance for the victims of all totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, which Croatia is observing for the first time this year as a remembrance day, President Ivo Josipovic on Tuesday forwarded a message saying that 23 August is the day for remembering all who have suffered throughout history because they were targeted by regimes that despised human rights and dignity.

Ideologies such as fascism, Nazism and communism led to the establishment of totalitarian, undemocratic and authoritarian regimes which caused many deaths, incarcerated many people and tortured them, the president said.

We must remember those who have fallen victim to the abuse of politics and powers, Josipovic added.

Throughout history, millions of people have fallen victim to unrestrained and inhumane political power, the president said.

Unfortunately, in its history Croatia has frequently had periods when fundamental human rights, such as the right to life and freedom, were disrespected. The original historical tenets of the Croatian Constitution -- anti-Fascism and the Homeland Defence War -- are democratic foundations of the present-day Croatian state and of all who wish peace, democracy and human rights, Josipovic said.

Victims of the previous wars, of the Holocaust, of the suffering in the post-WWII period and the abuse of powers in different historical frameworks, are a reminder that we must always and incessantly care about democracy and human rights, Josipovic said, warning against oblivion when it comes to crimes.
