The president of the Serb People's Council (SNV), Milorad Pupovac,
reminded that "Croatia and its Serbs have a long and deep historical
tradition". "The continuity of that tradition was severed in the
last ten years and the paper presented today should contribute to
continuing the successful preservation of that tradition", Pupovac
believes.
Journalist and writer Miljenko Jergovic expressed satisfaction
with the fact that a Cyrillic newspaper would appear at newsstands
in Croatia. "I am not saying this for the sake of provocation, but
because the Cyrillic script is part of our common cultural
heritage. The Cyrillic script is a script which the Croats,
regretfully, renounced in the last nine years," Jergovic added.
He expressed hope the paper would help the Croatian Serbs "leave the
ghetto they have found themselves in in the last eight to nine
years".
The paper is jointly published by the Serb People's Council from
Zagreb and the Joint Council of (Serb-dominated) Municipalities
(ZVO) from Vukovar. The Croatian Government Office for Minorities
has financially supported the weekly, which was confirmed today by
the Office's head Bahrija Sejfic.
