SARAJEVO, Dec 11 (Hina) - The head of the United Nations' mission in
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jacques Klein, on Saturday gave a special
statement on the occasion of the death of Croatia's President
Franjo Tudjman and conveyed heartfelt condolences to Tudjman's
family and the whole Croatian people.
Franjo Tudjman was a Croatian patriot. His work began long before
events in the past few years. History must not forget that he was a
Partisan who fought against Fascism in the Second World War and who
even during Tito's era had personal courage to express his own
stands and fight for what he believed in, Klein said in Sarajevo.
A former UN Transitional Administrator for the Croatian Danube
River Area, said Tudjman deserved respects for a policy he had led
in connection with the reintegration of that area into the
constitutional and legal order of the Republic of Croatia when many
had advocated a military operation.
Supporting the mandate of the UN and peaceful reintegration with
avoidance of new clashes, Tudjman saved thousands of lives - not
only of Croatian soldiers but also of people in that entire area.
And what is more important is that his prudent policy made it
possible to normalise relations with the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia, said the U.S. diplomat.
He also praised Tudjman for having been able to ensure the survival
of the Croatian State within its internationally recognised
borders after centuries of the external dominance's as well as for
his role in Croatia's bids to make its place in the European family
of states.
I know that he passionately believed in the European Croatia. This
is an aim to which all countries established after the break-up of
the former Yugoslavia should aspire, and I hope that democratically
elected successors to President Tudjman will have prudence to try
to accomplish that aim, Klein said.
