ZAGREB, Nov 11 (Hina) - The OSCE High Commissioner for national
minorities, Max van der Stoel, on Thursday held talks with Vesna
Skare-Ozbolt, Croatian President's political issues advisor and
the chairwoman of the National Trust Building Committee.
Their talks in Zagreb revolved around the situation in the Croatian
Danube River Area.
Skare-Ozbolt and the official of the Organisation for Security and
Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) discussed the process of exhumation of
victims of the Serb aggression in the eastern town of Vukovar.
In relation to exhumation in Vukovar I was told that emotions are
still very strong but that there are no reasons for the recurrence
of incidents like those which happened in Berak, van der Stoel said
to reporters in his short statement after the meeting.
Rally protests of Croat returnees in Berak, who demanded from local
Serbs information on missing members of their families, culminated
in the killing of one Serb.
According to a statement released by the Croatian President's
Office, Vesna Skare-Ozbolt notified the OSCE Commissioner of the
situation in eastern Slavonia and of conditions for a speedier
process of return and bringing life back to normal in the war-
affected areas.
The successful return and reconstruction in the war-stricken areas
are not possible without substantial financial assistance of the
international community, read the statement.
Max van der Stoel also on Thursday held talks with Croatian Deputy
Foreign Minister Ivo Sanader and Justice Minister Zvonimir
Separovic as well as with U.S. and British Ambassadors in Zagreb,
William Montgomery and Colin Munroe respectively.
The Sanader-van der Stoel meeting revolved around the new electoral
law but, according to the OSCE official, none of the meetings
touched the campaign in the run-up. Asked by a reporter he answered
that he knew that the number of seats for Serb deputies in the Sabor
would be reduced from three to one.
On Friday, the OSCE High Commissioner is travelling to eastern
Croatia to attend a celebration of the 4th anniversary of the
signing of the Erdut Agreement on the peaceful reintegration of the
Danube area. He will also meet local Croatian and Serb officials.
