PRAGUE, Nov 6 (Hina) - A two-day summit of premiers of Central
European Initiative (CEI) member-states, held in Prague, supported
the Stability Pact for south-eastern Europe and advocated the
Initiative's participation in the Pact's implementation.
The main topic of the gathering was the situation in south-eastern
Europe, particularly in Kosovo, as well as the CEI's role in the
implementation of the Stability Pact.
In a final document adopted on Saturday at the end of the summit, CEI
member-countries' premiers expressed their full support to the
Stability Pact and decided to use all mechanisms of the Initiative
to help carry out the Stability Pact.
We have agreed that a necessary condition for the economic recovery
of the Balkans is the full democratisation of the area, said Czech
Premier Milos Zeman, the chairman of the summit.
CEI member-states have good prospects of using their traditionally
good economic ties with that region and take part in its economic
revival, Zeman told a news conference after the end of the summit.
The Prague meeting also endorsed the set-up of an advisory
committee of the CEI, which will be chaired by Albania and
Macedonia. The committee should determine priority projects and
programmes through which the Initiative can play a role in the
conduct of the Stability Pact
In the Czech capital the CEI marked the tenth anniversary of its
establishment, and according to the final document, during these
ten years the Initiative has confirmed that it was response to an
important need.
At the Prague event on Friday and Saturday, Croatia was represented
by Premier Zlatko Matesa and Foreign Minister Mate Granic.
The CEI is a complementary process to the Stability Pact and the
Initiative is absolutely necessary perhaps even more now than in
the last ten years, Croatia's PM Matesa told Croatian reporters at
the end of the Prague summit.
The final document also applauds efforts aimed at creating
conditions for peace and democracy in the multiethnic Kosovo.
Besides this summit, an economic forum of the CEI was held in Prague
from 3 to 6 November. The forum devoted particular attention to
investments and trade in central and eastern European countries.
Hungary is the following country which will chair the CEI.
