ZAGREB, Nov 4 (Hina) - The team of doctors following the condition of Croatian war crimes suspect Mladen Naletilic Tuta unanimously concluded that at present they could not take the responsibility for the patient's life if it were
decided that he be transported to The Hague. According to a statement released on Thursday, the doctors' team based their conclusion on the tests and surgical interventions performed on Naletilic, as well as on the patient's progress. The statement said the doctors' team were pleased to take note of the independent opinion of Naletilic's condition by an expert medical team from The Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. According to Ivo Cikes of Zagreb's Rebro Clinic, who released the statement, the Tribunal's medical team fully agreed with the Croatian doctors' assessment, in diagnosis, therapy, and regarding the patient
ZAGREB, Nov 4 (Hina) - The team of doctors following the condition
of Croatian war crimes suspect Mladen Naletilic Tuta unanimously
concluded that at present they could not take the responsibility
for the patient's life if it were decided that he be transported to
The Hague.
According to a statement released on Thursday, the doctors' team
based their conclusion on the tests and surgical interventions
performed on Naletilic, as well as on the patient's progress.
The statement said the doctors' team were pleased to take note of
the independent opinion of Naletilic's condition by an expert
medical team from The Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal
for the Former Yugoslavia.
According to Ivo Cikes of Zagreb's Rebro Clinic, who released the
statement, the Tribunal's medical team fully agreed with the
Croatian doctors' assessment, in diagnosis, therapy, and regarding
the patient's transportability.
The team's position regarding the permanent impossibility of
transporting Naletilic to The Hague is based on a 80 percent
narrowing on the patient's right coronary artery.
Cikes said the narrowing could result either in sudden death due to
malignant arrhythmia or myocardial infarction with all
consequences. He also reminded of five risk factors with Naletilic
which could lead to a negative outcome of the narrowing.
Despite therapy, Naletilic occasionally shows symptoms indicating
angina pectoris, which according to the statement are almost
regularly caused by mental stress.
"Conditions of extreme mental stress, such as sending the patient
to prison conditions and a long trial, before an intervention
(PTCA) is performed on the right coronary artery, could facilitate
an acute blockage in the place of the existing coronary narrowing,"
said Cikes.
The Croatian team of doctors also contended Naletilic's attorney
Kresimir Krsnik's statement that The Hague Tribunal's medical team
were insufficiently skilled. According to the statement, the Dutch
medical team had been "excellently selected."
