Together with Lithuania and Hungary, Croatia was one of the
candidates for one out of six free seats the ECOSOC has for Eastern
Europe.
The ECOSOC is one of the most important bodies at the UN which
discusses top priority issues of economic and social development in
the world. The Council has 10 commissions for specific issues and
many sub-commissions.
"What the Security Council is on the political, the ECOSOC is on the
economic and social plan of UN's activity," Croatia's Ambassador to
the UN, Ivan Simonovic, said.
"The admission of Croatia to the ECOSOC is not the end, but just the
beginning," Simonovic said, adding victory in competition with
Lithuania and Hungary reflected the reputation of Croatia's
diplomacy and three years of persistent lobbying at the UN.
Croatia will officially enter ECOSOC on 1 January 2000.
