ZAGREB, Sept 27 (Hina) -"The Independent State of Croatia (NDH)
established a system which should have created an ethnically
cleansed state, and crimes in the Jasenovac camp served to help
achieve that ideal," said attorney Cedo Prodanovic, authorised
representative of the Boskovic family at the Dinko Sakic trial.
In his closing speech on Monday, lawyer Prodanovic said it was
irrefutably proved that Dinko Sakic, a former commander of the
Jasenovac camp, was guilty of war crime against civilian population
and of killing Mile Boskovic.
Therefore Prodanovic requested the Zagreb County Court's panel of
judges to find Sakic guilty and punish him according to law.
Commenting on Sakic's claims that the Jasenovac camp was a labour
camp where inmates had good accommodation, adequate hygienic
conditions, "interesting" cultural and sporting life and
entertainment, Prodanovic replied that such an "idyllic picture"
was totally untrue and unacceptable.
This was also proved by testimonies by survived prisoners,
statements of experts as well as legal regulations of the NDH which
reflect criminal character of the Ustashi Rule, according to
Prodanovic.
Therefore it can be concluded that the Jasenovac camp was not a
labour camp but primarily a camp for the elimination of members of
other religions, nationalities and races, and then of members and
collaborators of the Partisans' movement, Prodanovic added.
"Sakic's claim that he just carried out orders of his superiors does
not exempt him from responsibility," this lawyer said adding that
Sakic was not a sick person but an instrument and a part of the
criminal system that tried to achieve its goals by genocide.
Prodanovic believes that statements of former inmates - Dervis
Sarac, Milos Despot, Josip Erlich and Mihajlo Maric - were
unequivocal evidence that on 21 September 1944 Sakic had killed
Mile Boskovic by one shot from a pistol. That their statements do
not correspond in some details is understandable for Prodanovic, as
much time has passed since then.
Prodanovic said the Boskovic family would not seek any indemnity.
The trial is continuing with the closing speech of the defence.
