ZAGREB, Sept 24 (Hina) - A call by Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party bench head Vladimir Seks to opposition parties to try and draw closer to their stances over the election legislation, was taken by the opposition with a grain of
salt. On Thursday night Seks said that he believed it was still not too late to harmonise attitudes over the election law, offering to 'bury the hatchet' in an effort to find a solution to the election law, law on electoral units and on regulations governing the Croatian Radio Television (HRT). The coordinator of the Opposition Six Vlado Gotovac referred to this call as "a political game which is comprehensible in the current situation". ZAGREB, Sept 24 (Hina) - A call by Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)
party bench head Vladimir Seks to opposition parties to try and draw
closer to their stances over the election legislation, was taken by
the opposition with a grain of salt.
On Thursday night Seks said that he believed it was still not too
late to harmonise attitudes over the election law, offering to
'bury the hatchet' in an effort to find a solution to the election
law, law on electoral units and on regulations governing the
Croatian Radio Television (HRT).
The coordinator of the Opposition Six Vlado Gotovac referred to
this call as "a political game which is comprehensible in the
current situation". This is one way for the HDZ to try and show that
it was not responsible for the downfall in negotiations, that it is
not stubborn on its solution, that it is flexible and compromising.
If this were true however, our negotiations would have been
successfully completed some time ago, Gotovac said.
He questioned how anyone could believe that they could now in ten
days achieve something they have not been able to for six months.
Claiming that HDZ's offer was not sincere, Gotovac expressed that
he was particularly surprised at the statement that the HDZ and
Opposition Six could come to an agreement over the HRT. Seks himself
told me he would not accept any discussion on this topic.
Mato Arlovic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) said that any
offer of negotiations would be accepted although he did not believe
that at the moment this was possible any longer considering the
limited time available.
"An agreement on individual matters or sections could be
significant and interesting but also entail both positive and
negative repercussions for the electoral body", Arlovic said.
For this reason, he added, the SDP expresses doubt that consensus
can be reached however, we do not want to condemn this possibility
from the start. If this however, does not occur then the HDZ will
adopt the electoral law on its own and take full responsibility for
all the repercussions it entails for the electoral body, but much
wider, he said.
Caution towards Seks' offer was shown by Djurdja Adlesic of the
Croatian Social Liberal Party and Peter Zitnik of the Croatian
Peasants' Party.
"Seks' call is like the call of the mermaids", Zitnik claimed,
"reaching consensus would be the HDZ's ticket to the world", and
that is why they need it so much, he said.
