"CROATIA LINE" SHIPPING COMPANY DISMISSES EMPLOYEES

RIJEKA, Sept 14 (Hina) - Two hundred sixty six workers of the Rijeka-based "Croatia Line" shipping company were Tuesday handed resignations. Only 79 workers, also working on land, were not laid off. During the lay-off period, which lasts from one to six months, depending on the employment years in the company, the workers will be getting their wages without having to turn up for work. During that time, they could be called on if necessary. The payment of their severance pays is still uncertain because it is not known from what source the DM6,600,000 will be acquired. The Government has set aside about DM3 million for salaries from the Privatisation Fund, and the entire lay-off programme for "Croatia Line" costs DM9,625,000. The programme of care for laid-off workers was drawn up in July. The jobs for the remaining employees are uncertain as well because the company's fleet now only has 16 ships. Out of the

The programme of care for laid-off workers was drawn up in July. The jobs for the remaining employees are uncertain as well because the company's fleet now only has 16 ships. Out of the total, only three ships are afloat, and debts are putting even their sailing into question. Only two of the ships are not under mortgage. The shipping company's financial troubles began in 1997 when it took a US$99 million loan from Germany's "Hamburgische Landesbank". The bank is Croatia Line's biggest creditor. (hina) lml
