WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Hina) - David Aaron, an assistant to U.S.
Commerce Secretary, is confident that there are many unused
possibilities of the economic cooperation between Croatia and the
United States, and for him, recently reiterated assurances of
Croatia's top officials that their country would continue
cooperating with the Hague-based international war crimes tribunal
(ICTY) are sufficient to remove for the time being dangers of
breaking off trade courses.
During his press conference in Washington on Thursday, Aaron
announced his visit to Macedonia, Kosovo and Croatia between 19 and
21 September. He expects to hold talks with Croatia's Premier
Zlatko Matesa in Zagreb.
I will conveyed the U.S. expectations from Croatia to cooperate
fully with the ICTY and fulfil its obligations it assumed as a
signatory to the Dayton Accords, the U.S. official told reporters.
Asked whether his tour means that the Washington Administration
does not thing that it would be necessary to implement measures of
the so-called Lautenberg amendments, Aaron said that during his
recent meeting with U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Richard Holbrooke,
Croatian President Franjo Tudjman reiterated Croatia's readiness
to cooperate with the Hague Tribunal. In view to this, the State
Department had no complaints about my visit, Aaron added.
The U.S. Commerce Department attaches significant importance to
the current economic cooperation which involves jobs of big
companies such as Bechtel, Enron and Parsons in Croatia. They are
sure that there are additional possibilities for small and medium-
sized companies, but Croatia should create adequate legal and other
frameworks in order to help realise such plans.
Th talks which the U.S. representative is going to hold in Skopje,
Pristina and Zagreb as well as in Paris, Helsinki and Brussels
should contribute to preparations of a conference of economy and
trade ministers of member-countries of the Stability Pact (for
south-east Europe), convened for 1 and 2 November in Sofia under the
chairmanship of U.S. Commerce Secretary William Daley.
