ZAGREB/DJAKOVO, Sept 7 (Hina) - The largest Croatian refugee centre
Gasinci, which is currently almost completely empty, should be shut
down by the end of September 1999.
There are currently 90 refugees from Bosnia-Herzegovina and 146
Kosovo Albanians in the camp.
Bosnian refugees will be relocated this week to other refugee
centres in Croatia, whereas Kosovo Albanians will return to Kosovo,
said Anamarija Radic, spokeswoman for the Office for Displaced
Persons and Refugees.
The refugee centre was opened in May 1992. Since then, more than
35,000 refugees, mainly Bosnian Croats and Muslims, but also
Croatian Serb returnees and Kosovo Albanians, have gone through the
camp.
The current number of refugees in the camp is way below the camp's
capacity (3,500 to 4,000 people), and the high overhead costs have
to be paid for the almost completely empty camp. The Croatian
government has been paying all overheads for some time now.
According to Radic, it is still to early to talk about what the camp
will serve for in the future.
