Civil society association calls for annulment of clause pegging loans to foreign currencies

ZAGREB, Aug 13 (Hina) - The civil society association of debtors called "Franak" on Saturday called for the immediate and unconditional reduction of interest rates on all loans pegged to foreign currencies and approved under variable interest rates.

The association's representatives said at a news conference in Zagreb that they would propose those and other measures to the relevant agencies next weeks

We are for the reduction of interest rates by three percentage points on all loans, irrelevant of which foreign currency they are tied to and of the type of the loans, the association's co-ordinator Tomislav Prpic told a news conference presenting measures they are going to take next week.

Apart from interest rate cuts, we will demand the abolishment of clauses linking loans to the exchange rate, Prpic said.

The association announces a possibility of requesting the Constitutional Court to assess whether the exchange rate linkage clauses are in compliance with the national constitution.

It is going to file complaints with the state prosecutorial authorities, the state inspectorate and other institutions for "unjustified rise in interest rates".

Prpic said that the Croatian National Bank's proposal about balloon loans as a measure to ease the burden on debtors was actually in favour of the banks and to the detriment of borrowers.
