About 90 persons of Serb nationality accused of war crimes are
currently imprisoned in Croatian prisons, Pupovac said at a press
conference held in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar on
Thursday. Most of them are in a good health condition, and most of
them only object to the slowness of the Croatian judiciary
regarding their requests for retrials, Pupovac said.
Pupovac and Stanimirovic will demand from the Supreme Court
President to accelerate those processes.
Addressing the political situation in Croatia, Pupovac said that
some political parties have destabilising aims and they undermine
positive achievements of peaceful reintegration.
Pupovac said that president of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP),
Ante Djapic, in cooperation with SNV secretary general Veselin
Pejnovic, has been creating an atmosphere suitable for the removal
of Serbs from the Croatian Danube River region.
According to Stanimirovic, protests staged by Croatian returnees
to the Danube River region were planned and their aim was to
frighten Serbs. He added that the remaining 11 Serb families in the
eastern Croatian village of Berak would flee their homes by early
September.
Croatian returnees to Berak have been protesting for the past
several months, demanding that light be shed on the fate of over 20
non-Serb residents of Berak who went missing during the Serb
occupation of the village.
Both, Pupovac and Stanimirovic advocated for finding a positive
solution and defining a transitional period regarding the
moratorium on military service for persons of Serb nationality in
the Croatian Danube River region.
The two officials expressed interest in talks with Croatian Defence
Minister regarding that issue.
