ZAGREB, July 27 (Hina) - The Croatian Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Communications, Zeljko Luzavec, on Tuesday said the traffic collapse which happened over the weekend on the ferry service connecting the mainland with

ZAGREB, July 27 (Hina) - The Croatian Minister of Maritime Affairs,
Transport and Communications, Zeljko Luzavec, on Tuesday said the
traffic collapse which happened over the weekend on the ferry
service connecting the mainland with the island of Pag had been
caused by a strong gale.
Officials in the Ministry also pointed to delays in the
reconstruction of the bridge linking the mainland with Pag, adding
the Croatian Road Management was responsible for it.
Luzavec's assistant Zeljko Vivoda said the Pag bridge should be
opened for traffic in early September and reminded that
reconstruction works were late also because of poor weather
conditions.
Asked whether the Ministry would request the resignation of
Aleksandar Caklovic, the head of the Croatian Road Management,
Luzavec said he had already requested it.
Speaking about the traffic collapse on the ferry service linking
the mainland with Pag, Luzavec said the delay had been caused by the
closure of the Prizna-Zigljen connection due to the gale. Traffic
toward Pag was therefore re-directed to the Fortica-Miletici
connection, which caused long delays, Luzavec said.
The Ministry officials stressed the Croatian Road Management
should have secured alternative routes, that is, additional ferry
connections.
Commenting on yesterday's statement by Tourism Minister Ivan Herak
that the Ministry of Transport was responsible for the traffic
collapse over the weekend, Luzavec said Herak probably did not know
much about traffic and should have consulted him before he gave the
statement.
