Separovic on Tuesday received Bernard Poncet, the newly appointed
chief of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe
(OSCE) Mission to Croatia, at the latter's request.
According to a Justice Ministry statement, Poncet in open and
constructive talks pointed to several positive things in the
Croatian judiciary, as well as to some negative ones, especially
the high backlog in courts, and slow court proceedings.
He also spoke about some issues related to war crimes trials.
Separovic said the present state of affairs in the judiciary is much
better. The increase in the number of reports on allegedly
committed war crimes is, among else, related to the increased
number of returnees recognising those who, in their opinion,
committed those crimes, he explained.
Criminal proceedings are held in instances when there is new
reliable evidence, the justice minister said, adding the courts
perform their constitutional obligation to hold independent and
unbiased trials.
Both Separovic and Poncet expressed mutual satisfaction with the
good cooperation between the Croatian Justice Ministry and the OSCE
Mission to Croatia.
