(15%), whereas the number of domestic tourists fell by 30,858 (14%). Assistant Tourism Minister Gordana Borojevic said the situation in tourism was not so grim as had been expected. She said the upward trend in tourist arrivals was the result of additional promotional activities on foreign markets, and the calming down of the situation in neighbouring Yugoslavia. Tourist developments are improving day by day and it could be said that the final results from tourism will be better than had been expected, which means that the overall decrease in tourist turnover will be lower than the one mentioned during NATO air strikes on Yugoslavia (30-40 per cent), Borojevic said. She stressed that some destinations, such as Makarska and Kukljica
on the island of Ugljan, already have very good results.
On July 5, Istria County had the highest number of tourists - 82,979
- which is 10.1 less than last year. Primorje-Gorski Kotar County
had 51,954 visitors (a 15% decrease), whereas Split-Dalmatia
County had 27,834 tourists or 12% less than last year.
The largest number of foreign tourists are vacationing in Istria
County - 78,929, which is 10% less than in 1998. There are 43,774
foreign visitors in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County (a 17% decrease)
and 21,929 (a 19% decrease) in Split-Dalmatia County.
Lika-Senj County is the only Croatian county which this summer had
an increase in tourist visits. Currently, 7,489 tourists are on
holidays in that county, which is a 22 per cent increase in relation
to last summer.
Domestic tourists are mostly visiting resorts in Primorje-Gorski
Kotar County. An increase in the number of domestic tourists was
also registered in Split County.
Of all towns and municipalities in Zadar County, Nin had the largest
number of tourists on July 5 (2,787). It is followed by Zadar with
2,553 tourists and Vir with 2,318, mainly weekend tourists.
The biggest fall in overnight stays was registered in Dubrovnik-
Neretva County. According to the county authorities, there were
42,445 overnight stays in the last ten days, which is a 38.7
decrease compared to 1998.
