KOPRIVNICA, July 1 (Hina) - The president of the Croatian Farmers' Association (HSS), Ivan Kolar, on Thursday expressed satisfaction with yesterday's agreement with the Government, which, he said, had met some of farmers' requests.
The protests ended peacefully, Kolar said at a news conference in Koprivnica, commending the professional conduct of the police. Commenting on claims that the protests were actually the beginning of the pre-election campaign of the Croatian Peasants' Party (HSS), Kolar said "the situation in the field has proven that parties cannot divide farmers, but rather that farmers are interested in being able to exercise their rights and secure normal living". Heads of the Union of Sugar Beet Industry said the money owed by the Virovitica sugar refinery to farmers should be paid within two weeks. If this is not done, the Union will organise new rallies, Union representatives said.(hina) rm
